A Cart By Any Other Name…

Reading Nielson and Loranger’s Web Usability is very insightful as to the aspects of online behavior in customers – it’s a smooth read and so far so good. I was ploughing along just fine and dandy, but then ran into what I believe is a mistake. On page 19 the authors get on the case of a UK website called watches.co.uk and while most of their arguments are sound, there is one that doesn’t ring true to me. Nielson and Loranger declare that since watches.co.uk are a part of e-commerce that the site should follow ’their’ specialized guidelines for shopping carts. According to the authors this website violated the guidelines by calling the shopping cart a ‘basket’ which is not as optimal as calling it a cart…It’s small and it’s petty of me, but it has to be pointed out. Watches.co.uk is a site generated for people in the United Kingdom and as with many different locations in the world, there are a series of cultural lingusitics that differ. When I came over to America and went shopping, I was looking for a trolley or a basket, not a cart. I’d never, ever heard of a trolley/basket being called a cart before. For a British site to call a basket a cart would be like me asking somone in the USA for a torch, instead of a flashlight. Brits are going to understand the word basket, not cart. Nielson and Loranger, it might be the World Wide Web, but there are still language barriers on occasion. All right, rant over.

P.S. – Even Amazon.co.uk uses ‘basket’ and not ‘cart’ – ha!

Are You A Man Or A Mouse?

Posted by blandable on January 30, 2008

A study in Leipzig recently discovered that if you feed mice McDonald’s hamburgers then they essentially become ‘more human’. What on earth is that supposed to mean? Please tell me who funded this study because I believe that I could cash in on the idiot. A mouse is supposed to be a mouse, it’s meant to eat cheese and run away from a cat called Tom – so please, scientists of the world, don’t mess with my stereotypes because I just can’t handle it anymore. Granted, I know the scientists were trying to see what evolutionary step made humans the cerebrial powerhouses of this planet (ego much?), but c’mon enough is enough. All I’ve got now is a picture of Mickey pulling into a drivethru in a Beemer, demanding that the server supersize him. It’s just so wrong. So very, very wrong…

Just Some Facts

So far I’ve had several friends and even a couple of my professors try and explain to me what goes on in the American election and how things are done. I still don’t understand. I’ve come to the conclusion that either people are crap at explaining or I am very, very slow. Be that as it may, here are some critical dates in the run up to the election and I thought I’d share them with you (how kind I am). Oh and check MSNBC out, it helps answer some questions you might have about the whole process of getting yourself an American President. I now officially know more about American politics than British. My mother would be so ashamed…

Doggy Don’ts and Doo Doos

Posted by blandable on January 29, 2008

2007-summer-065.jpg

Ok, so man’s best friend has always been the dog, but personally I used to be a cat person (until I got a cat  called Arnold that was in-bred – he turned feral and bit my nose so Arnold went bye-bye). So, I decided to get a dog instead. His name is Kez and he’s one hell of a cool dude – he chases squirrel’s, barks at walls and whines when I dress him up as a lobster for Halloween. Good stuff.

Be that as it may, I am not the best dog person. I am lazy by nature and should have stuck with a cat. If I was a nice owner I would play with Kez more instead of switching Animal Planet on for him. And if I was a really good owner, I would walk him more than once a day, but hey, I don’t. My bad. But I love him.

Kez is a pretty good boy, he can sit and stay and play dead, but one thing he is not good at is being around other dogs. He’s awful when he sees another canine and yelps so loudly you’d think someone stuck a stick…where it shouldn’t go. Whenever he barks, do I get up and go see what is wrong? Nope, because usually there’s nothing there, so instead I just shout at Kez and he goes off in a huff.

Now to my main problem and the reason of my guilt. Yes, I said guilt. For I have done an injustice to my dear darling doggy, as I just discovered today. Five houses down from me is a fellow that annoys the hell out of me. He is the type to start mowing his lawn at 7am on a saturday morning. On a staurday morning people! Evil.

Anyho, he has one of those toy poodles that looks like an over grown rat. Kez hates it – I’m sure he thinks it’s a squirrel. So, I was in bed reading a book for college and Kez goes off on a yapping spree. Bark, woof, woof, bark…argh! Headache city. So I shout at him and Kez sulks off as usual – poor lad.

Only this time I happened to stand up to get something and guess what I saw when I looked out of the window? The annoying guy from down the road was walking on my lawn, letting his rat-dog pee and poop over everything. I was furious!

Then he did something stranger. He walked up my driveway to the front door and let his dog poop there as well! I couldn’t believe it. A grown man letting his dog deficate on my front door. A million things passed through my head – mainly revenge. I had visions of roasting his dog over a spit and then collecting the droppings and returning them ‘with flair’ to my mean neighbor’s house. But I didn’t. I’m still considering what to do about the situation…

Hogzilla

Hogzilla

Advisory – vegetarians will not appreciate what I have to say in this section, sorry. But you’ve been warned…

I just watched a documentory on Natotional Geographic, as one does on a saturday evening when you have no life. It was about, suprise – Hogzilla, this huge pig-hog thing from Georgia USA. My first thought as I watched grown men dig in dirt for hours to find a six month dead pig, was why? Why are you doing this? To establish that the beast was authentic and not faked through some photo work shop? Well, that’s what the point seemed to be. I couldn’t help but feel that maybe, somewhere out there, there was a more important story that needed to be told. Sure, pigs are great and a big one could be really exciting, but in the end, all the show did for me was make me crave a bacon sandwich. Ah, bacon, the dieter’s nemesis. When they dug the body of the hybrid hog up, it was said to weigh 800lbs. Have you any idea how many bacon sandwiches I could have gotten from that? And to think they killed it and wasted all that meat. The carnivore in me is digusted. Tut-tut.

My Vague Memories of the Learning Record

Posted by blandable on January 26, 2008

Hello everyone, it was great meeting you all in class the other day. Before I even go back and start looking at the Learning Record (which I thought I had put behind me a year ago!) I wanted to try and remember what I could off the top of my head.

I can randomly recall that I had to write and document a number of things, such as new ideas or techniques I had learned or experienced in class. Doing a Learning Record was like keeping a journal; it helped to show how I had progressed throughout the semester. I know that at first it can seem confusing and there are lots of little parts that need to be written and documented, but at the end when you put parts A, B and C together, it somehow, finally, makes sense.

All right, I don’t remember much else, but thankfully I still have my old Learning Record (bwahahaha!) which will no doubt trigger my nightmares…erm…memory. Anyone else who wants to view the Word document can do so at a minimal fee of $20 (cash only please). Heh.

Part A1 and A2 are done somewhere in the beginning of the semester and they focus on your interests and talents. A1 requests that you to do an interview with someone you know, asking them their opinion of you and your ability with the selected topics, which in this case would be Writing for Electronic Communities. A2 asks you to write a personal reflection about the course and your abilities in writing and technology. Simple as that folks.

Then comes the observations. For those of you who dislike keeping journals, you will detest this part. In this section you will write down your observations, from activities in class, homework, discussions, group work etc. This is done over the duration of the semester and then is compiled at the end of section A. Under observations is the work samples that you have produced in class. These can include online discussions with a link provided, to examples of your written work and class assignments.

B1 is like a mid-term analysis of your progress. You will talk about what you have achieved and what you still need to improve on, keeping in mind the goals of the major course strands and the five dimensions of learning. B2 is more or less the same process, but is conducted at the end of the semester, a final analysis of your work.

And then, finally, the best part of the Learning Record – GRADING YOURSELF! C1 is where you give yourself a midterm grade, C2 is your final grade, each of which you have to justify to the professor. Fun stuff! Word to the wise – be realistic when grading yourself and be sure to back up your argument with plenty of evidence. Simply put, if you document plenty of observations and work samples, then you are more likely to have material to use as evidence to fight Dr. Wolff in the all important Battle of the Grades. If all else fails people, you can always try buying Giant’s tickets…I can’t imagine any other bribe would work on our professor.

I hope this has helped some of you, if you have  any further questions, please ask. Advice is free (but my sample of the Learning Record is not…lol). Seriously, it seems like a lot of unnecessary work, but the Learning Record gives you something concrete to look back on. You can see where you have triumphed and where you still need to improve, so it’s worth it.

Good luck!

And Obama took SC

Posted by blandable on January 25, 2008

Please note, I do not mean to offend anyone with my opinions, I am merely voicing some ideas that wander though my head.

All right. I’m going to try and not get annoyed, I really am. I am not against Barrack Obama succeeding in his fight to be the Democratic nominee for the 2008 election, but I have to say, the media is making me dislike his campaign strategy more and more. I don’t understand why when he wins a state he is hailed a hero. So far he is still behind Hillary and in the national polls he is behind her in double digits - so why wave the flag of victory so soon? His strategies make me uncomfortable, as a European. I’ve never been confronted with the power of the “black vote” and I find myself perhaps, naively bewildered as to what the fuss is all about. This election is not for the first black president. Nor is it, in Hillary’s case, strictly for the first female president. This election is vital and I feel like it is coming down to a competition between feminists and the race card. And that disturbs me – exciting to watch, but dear Lord, how scary it must be to think the leader of my nation being selected in such a manner. I never, ever thought of going republican in my life, but the clownish antics of the Democrats is making the republicans look stable – who’d have thought it? Perhaps America’s greatest dream come true would be Al Gore walking back in at the last minute. Gore, we’re waiting…
